This will be a non-technical discussion introducing students to the application of biostatistics.  There will be three principal objectives: i) give a broad explanation of the field of biostatistics and various applications within the field; ii) walk through a motivating example of the typical analytic scenario that we work on in applied biostatistics; and iii) educate students about career opportunities in different environments (academic medicine, pharmaceutical companies, insurance providers) and the challenges in pursuit of each.”

Bio: Dr. Althouse received a Bachelor’s of Science in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008.  He then earned a Master’s degree in Applied Statistics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010 and finally a doctoral degree in Epidemiology from the Graduate School of Public Health in August 2013.  Upon graduation, he was appointed faculty biostatistician at Magee Womens Research Institute for two years.  In 2015, he was recruited to join the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute as the founding member of the HVI’s Clinical Biostatistics Core, currently a three-person team supporting research in both cardiology and cardiac surgery.  Dr. Althouse has presented at national meetings of the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, American Statistical Association, and International Biometrics Society as well as co-authoring papers in a wide survey of peer-reviewed journals on topics related to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, exercise, maternal & child health.  To date Dr. Althouse has collaborated on over 80 published research manuscripts and 100 conference presentations.  Current research interests include general and interventional cardiology, heart failure, transcatheter therapies, aortic valve replacement, mitral valve repair and replacement, and ventricular assist devices
