Continued Needs
Resources available to students of statistics include the following.
- Opportunities to gain valuable consulting experience and involvement in applied research under
the guidance of professional statisticians through the Statistical
Consulting Center, a consulting service that is part of the department and offered to the Pitt
community. The center is an excellent source of practical experience for graduate students.
- Department facilities include computer labs with the latest
statistical software, as well as cooperative arrangements with many major scientific organizations
within the University. These include the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute,
the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, Pitt’s
Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, the University’s Learning Research and Development Center,
and the Departments of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in Pitt's
Graduate School of Public Health.
- Attractive financial aid packages, including teaching and research assistantships and Mellon fellowships. All
of these include a full-tuition scholarship, stipend, and health benefit package. The University has many
support mechanisms for new teaching assistants that help them to develop their teaching skills.
- Pitt is part of the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC), a joint venture
with Carnegie Mellon University and Westinghouse Electric Company. The PSC teaches
researchers how to use high-powered computers while helping private industry access leading-edge
technologies. Established in 1986, the PSC is supported by several federal agencies, the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, and private businesses.

Library contains more than 18,000 volumes and 225 research journals.
