Regretting the Springer Decision

In previous updates to the text, we supplied the L^AT_EX files and Springer used those files directly. Because of the increased use of print-on-demand and electronic books, Springer outsourced the production of this edition, which was a conversion of the original L^AT_EX to XML.

The first pass was a nightmare. The second pass was better and frankly we had enough of the disaster that we approved this version. However, we later noticed a number of strange things (incorrect citations and cross-referencing …) so we decided to distribute the correct version here. The numbering of this pdf (examples, properties, and so on) is the same as the Springer version, but the page numbering can be off a bit.
